Are coupled renewable-battery power plants more valuable than independently sited installations?

June 15, 2021

In this webinar, researchers from Lawrence Berkeley National Lab will discuss their new study on the value of adding batteries to renewable power plants. They will outline methods to assess how pricing volatility differences between nodes within the 7 U.S. ISO/RTO electricity markets impact the system value of coupled or "hybrid" renewable-battery projects and compare that value to independent renewable and battery installation system value. The webinar will highlight that wide regional variation in coupling value exists. Furthermore, the researchers will show that independent siting of batteries sometimes but not always leads to more valuable projects, suggesting roles for both independent and coupled projects in the electric system.
