Valuing Technology Complementarities: Rooftop Solar and Energy Storage

This webinar summarizes key findings from a new study by scholars from Berkeley Lab, Yale, New York University, and PUC Chile on the coadoption of grid-connected distributed solar photovoltaic systems and residential battery energy storage. The paper uses data on nearly 2 million solar systems and over 50,000 solar + battery storage systems to model the demand for solar and battery storage. The study quantifies the degree of complementarity between solar and energy storage, demonstrating that if the energy storage option did not exist, 20% of those coadopting would not adopt solar or battery storage. Importantly, we find that power outages affect the demand for coadoptions, with the strongest effect in California.
