EMP supports the modernization of isolated power systems through engineering-economic analyses and collaborations with governmental entities, utilities, universities, Alaska native corporations, National Laboratories, and power system suppliers. To date, this support has focused on assisting remote Alaska (Arctic) communities in their transition to more sustainable energy systems. In this capacity, EMP is conducting research and providing technical support to identify the barriers and opportunities that arise when developing sustainable, remote power systems.
Specific technical support activities include the following:
- Identifying sustainable energy solutions for rural Alaska (report)
- Participating in the multi-lab Alaska microgrid partnership to develop affordable, clean, reliable, and scalable islanded-power systems
