Applications of Value-based Reliability/Resilience Planning

Electric utilities are increasingly accounting for the costs of power interruptions to their customers via a formal approach known as value-based reliability planning. EMP supports that effort by developing and promoting the use of reliability value-based planning approaches.

Publicly available tools, including the Berkeley Lab-sponsored ICE Calculator figure prominently in these approaches. EMP develops and provides information on reliability value-based planning methods and on leading examples of utility applications of the approach.

Berkeley Lab participates actively in industry forums that focus on this topic. These include the IEEE Distribution Reliability Working Group, the National Association of Regulatory Utilities Commission (NARUC) Electricity Reliability Staff Subcommittee, and the American Public Power Association
