Brian Gerke is a Research Scientist in the Energy Efficiency Standards and Electricity Markets and Policy Departments at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Gerke's research focuses on data-driven modeling of emerging technological approaches that can support the more efficient and flexible use of energy. Gerke leads several analysis and data collection efforts supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's Appliance Standards program. He also leads a variety of efforts to model the potential for demand response to support regional electricity systems as they transition to a high-renewables future, including the California Demand Response Potential Study for the California Public Utilities Commission. Gerke's work has touched on emerging technologies across a range of sectors, including LED lighting, electric vehicles, and smart building controls, with applications across a range of geographical scales, from California to the United States to the international space.
Gerke has authored numerous journal articles and technical reports. His work has been presented at research conferences and to policymakers, regulators, and stakeholders at state, national, and international levels.
Previously, Gerke was an astrophysicist at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, where he studied cosmology and galaxy formation.
Gerke holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley; an M.Phil. in physics from Cambridge University, and a B.A. in physics and English from Williams College.
